And now three years later, we handed over another clinic just opposite the maternity clinic. This clinic was a renovation project of an existing four-room clinic that once was the only health facility available to many villages within a ten-mile radius. The clinic was in need of much repair and updates to be adequate enough to serve this large population. This new facility has everything from a screening room to separate ‘wards’ for men, women and children.

The planning and building of this project took over one year and was completed in October of 2014. The building project was a full community effort and created income generation for members of the local community.

There were over 500 people who came to the handover. People from the villages walked for miles to attend the handover. All the children from the Katombora Basic School and the Katombora Reformatory School attended and performed skits and dances. The Preschool kids were part of the entertainment as well, and several of the women from the villages, performed cultural dances in the hot sand in thanksgiving and happiness for the new clinic. Many dignitaries were present for the occasion, and the event was televised by the national television station.

The new clinic has a registry room, screening/exam room, children’s ward, a male ward, with male toilet and shower, a female ward, with toilet and shower, an ART/Injection Room, a pharmacy; and it further houses an Environmental Office, which will help to enable a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment. The “under-five” clinic, prenatal care, and emergency care, are also provided at this facility. Both the maternity clinic, and the new clinic, has hot and cold water. In addition an incinerator was built and an outside kitchen, and clean water is provided by a borehole installed on the clinic grounds.

We are proud to say that the building of the new clinic was by local people, providing income for the local community.

In 2010, we built a maternity clinic at Katombora, Zambia.
