Other forms of under-nutrition in Zambia include wasting or acute malnutrition (low weight for height), with about five per cent of children under the age of five years being wasted and under-weight, while about 54 per cent of children suffer from both vitamin A and iron deficiencies.

Despite impressive levels of economic growth over the last five to 10 years, the country’s progress in tackling malnutrition has lagged considerably behind other countries, many of which have been growing at much slower rates. The economic cost of under nutrition to Zambia since 2004-2013 is estimated to be as high as US$775 million. [Source: Miriam Zimba – TIMES OF ZAMBIA NEWSPAPER]

Early each day we are in Munyanya Village, which is located in the Kazungula District in Zambia. This area has been affected by persistent drought, and consequently low harvest of traditional food crops. In fact the Kazungula area has the harshest climatic conditions, rainfall less than 800mm, and a short crop-growing season.

Treadle pump handover

We recently presented 15 treadle pumps to both female and male farmers. The people who received the treadle pumps had training on the pumps and how best to use them in their gardens. This initiative emphasizes nutrition education, cultivating foods high in vitamins and micronutrients, strengthening connections between rural producers and urban consumers, and educating farmers on nutrient management and pesticide usage. This comprehensive approach will continue to ensure greater financial stability and nutrient-rich diets for low-income families.

The treadle pumps come with hose pipes. People were using the treadle pumps almost immediately. People who already had gardens were carrying buckets of water up from the Zambezi River to water the gardens and this is no easy task and very time consuming to say the least. With the treadle pump the people will now be able to produce more crops and have larger fields. This will enable people to also sell some of their crops and reap an income. At present there are three families who are selling tomatoes and green vegetables to a hotel in Livingstone. When this happens parents will be able to pay school fees for their children. We work to strengthen low-income farmers’ access to markets, which results in greater profits and higher annual income.

Ferrying educational and sporting goods to the island

There are some islands that we have been doing some projects in. Using a canoe on the Zambezi River is standard mode of transporting goods to the islands. Recently we had a sports program and distributed uniforms for soccer, and netball and volleyball. We also distributed Good News Bibles for many of the people in the village. The schools here require Religious Knowledge classes so the Good News Bibles were ever so welcomed.

Zambia has one of the highest rates of stunting in children under the age of five years in the world, with figures indicating 45.8 per cent, higher than the average 42 per cent for the African continent.
