Plans are underway to start a literacy program in the afternoons in the very near future. The first day of the preschool we had a total of 47 children who attended. The children are very poor, but they came to school in the very best clothing they had. They are excited to be able to learn and have a safe environment to learn and play at the same time.

Newly built toilets for school children

Lack of access to sanitation is a major problem affecting the rural areas of Zambia and Munyanya Village is no exception. Therefore we have built 3 toilets for the community. Poor sanitation is a major cause of diarrheal disease, lost labor productivity for adults, missed school days for children, and additional financial burdens for families requiring medical treatment. Most of the kids had never seen a building that had a toilet so they were afraid to go inside at first. So the preschool teacher had a lesson for them on how to use the toilets. We built two “hand washing stations” one located in close proximity to the toilets and the other located near the classroom. We held a teaching session on hand washing.

School children playing sports, wearing donated uniforms from Taylor Co. Zambian schools usually have sports day on Wednesday afternoons.

We approached one of the local establishments in Livingstone to see if they would save us a one of their local newspaper. We put the newspaper in the multi-purpose building so the people who can read can improve their English and keep up on events in Zambia.

Additionally, we have helped one of the residents in Munyanya Village to set up a “barber shop”. Due to income of one of the villagers whom helped train some of the farmers and has helped with the construction of the multi-purpose building has set up an ‘informal’ barber shop which brings in a bit of income for the family.

We have built a temporary multi-purpose building which has a preschool that meets each morning; Monday – Friday.
